Build a Custom Menu Nutrition Tool with AI
I recently did a demo for a meal prep company with an interesting use-case. Their customers don't pick from a list of fixed meals. They build their own bowls and choose exactly how much of each component they want, down to the ounce.
Many of their clients are high-performance athletes, including bodybuilders, and for them exact macros matter a lot. An extra 2 oz of chicken or 1 oz less rice changes everything. The company wanted every client to see accurate nutrition for whatever bowl they built before placing their order.
ReciPal isn't a customized meal builder out of the box. However, our API gives you everything you need to build that and with AI tools you don't even need a developer.
What Is an API?
An API (Application Programming Interface) is a structured way for two pieces of software to talk to each other. You can think of it as a menu for software. Your website or app asks ReciPal for something specific, like "give me the calories for this recipe," and ReciPal sends back exactly that in a predictable format.
You don't need to log into ReciPal and copy numbers by hand. Your tools pull the data directly and always get the latest version.
All of ReciPal's API documentation is publicly available making it easy to understand how it works and everything it's capable of.
What's an API Key?
An API key is a unique code that identifies your account when your software makes a request to ReciPal. It works like a password for your apps:
- It authenticates you. ReciPal knows the request comes from your account and returns your recipes and data.
- It keeps your data private. Only requests with your key can reach your account's information.
- It should be treated like a password. Don't post it publicly or share it with people who shouldn't have access.
You can find your API key in your ReciPal account settings.
What You Can Do with ReciPal's API
The ReciPal API opens up the ingredient, recipe, and nutrition data in your account so you can use it anywhere. Common uses include:
- Pulling recipe and ingredient nutrition data into your website, app, or internal tools
- Showing nutrition facts and macros on product pages or online ordering platforms
- Building custom tools, like the custom bowl tool in this post
- Connecting ReciPal to your other systems, such as e-commerce, ordering, or accounting software
Why Our Documentation Matters
ReciPal's API documentation is thorough. It explains every endpoint, what each request needs, and what the response looks like. That matters for developers, but it matters even more when you're working with AI.
AI tools are only as good as the information you give them. When I gave Lovable our API documentation, it didn't have to guess how ReciPal works. It knew exactly how to request the data and how to read the response. Good documentation lets the AI build working code on the first try instead of making things up.
The Build: From Idea to Working Tool in a Few Prompts
For this demo I used Lovable, an AI-powered website and app builder. You describe what you want in plain English, and it writes the code.
Step 1: Set up the components in ReciPal
I created the default chicken bowl recipe in ReciPal: chicken, veggies, rice, and sauce. ReciPal handles the nutrition calculations using its verified ingredient database.
Step 2: Give Lovable the documentation and your API key
I pasted in ReciPal's API documentation and my API key, and told Lovable what I wanted: a tool where customers adjust the bowl components and see the nutrition update in real time.
💪 Pro Tip: Prompt the chatbot to ask you questions to help refine and optimize the scope before building anything.
Step 3: Refine with prompts
With a few follow-up prompts, I added:
- Adjustment configurations sliders that move in 1 oz increments
- Reset to default one button can return you to the standard configuration
- Max limits, so customers can't build a bowl the kitchen can't make
- A dynamic ingredient list that reorders itself in descending order by weight based on how the bowl is built
The Result
The result was a working bowl customizer built specifically for this company's needs. I didn't write a line of code, and it took just a few prompts.
Why You Shouldn't Rely on AI Alone
You might ask: if AI can build the tool, why not have AI calculate the nutrition too?
For a casual user, a rough AI estimate might be fine. For a bodybuilder tracking every gram, or a business putting nutrition information in front of customers, it isn't. Here's why:
- The underlying data isn't reliable. AI is not a nutrition database. Ask it how much protein is in 6 oz of grilled chicken and you'll get a confident answer, but it may be an estimate, come from an unreliable source, or simply be wrong.
- It doesn't consistently understand labeling regulations. Nutrition labeling has detailed rules about serving sizes, rounding, required nutrients, and formatting. AI often mixes up what's allowed, combines rules from different standards, or applies them incorrectly.
- There's no record behind it. AI doesn't store your recipes, track how they change over time, or keep the data behind a label. If a customer, retailer, or regulator asks how you got a number, you have nothing to show them, and nothing to reuse or analyze later.
- You only see the final number. Labels show rounded values, but the unrounded data behind them matters for accuracy, reformulation, and combined products like a custom bowl. AI gives you a single number with no way to see what's underneath.
- It doesn't account for real-world production factors. Cooking causes moisture loss, prep creates waste, and yields vary. ReciPal is built to account for these factors so the nutrition reflects the food your customers actually eat, not just the raw ingredients.
ReciPal is built to get these details right every time. That's why the best approach is to pair the two:
- ReciPal provides the expertise: reliable ingredient data, consistent calculations, regulation-aware labeling, and a stored, auditable record of every recipe.
- AI provides the flexibility: custom interfaces built in minutes, adapted to your business through plain-English prompts, and quick to change as your needs evolve.
When you pair them, ReciPal's data acts as a guardrail. AI handles the presentation and the custom logic, and the numbers your customers see come from ReciPal. You get AI's speed and creativity without giving up accuracy.
Beyond Custom Bowls
This example was for one meal prep company, but the same approach works for many other uses. If you can describe it, you can probably build it with ReciPal's API and an AI builder.
