One of the possible front-of-package labels.

Canadian food products need to comply with the front-of-package (FOP) nutrition labeling regulations. Starting January 1, 2026, foods high in saturated fat, sugars, or sodium must display a mandatory nutrition symbol on the front of the package. You can find the full guidance on the CFIA website.

To help food manufacturers, processors, and brand owners stay compliant, we’ve created a free Front-of-Package Nutrition Symbol Generator. This tool helps you quickly determine:

  • Whether your product requires a FOP nutrition symbol
  • Which symbol is right for your product
  • How to download what you need

To generate your nutrition symbol, you’ll need to provide:

  • Serving size (how much food the label is based on)
  • Amount of saturated fat (in grams)
  • Amount of sugars (in grams)
  • Amount of sodium (in milligrams)
Make sure these values are accurate — the label is based on whether any of these nutrients are above certain thresholds set by Health Canada. The tool assumes your product is for children four years of age or older and adults. Once you fill out the form, the correct front-of-package symbol will be generated for you.

Select the size and format appropriate to your packaging. You can find out more information on the correct size and placement for your package on the CFIA website.

Please enter in all of the nutrition values to see if your product requires a front-of-package symbol.
